Go back in time with recent aerial imagery

Use the Metromap Aerial date picker to see older aerial photos of a site and track how it has changed.

Updated 2 min read DevelopersProperty servicesRenovators

Metromap Aerial keeps past captures as well as the latest one. Stepping back through them shows how a site has changed: when a house was knocked down, when a subdivision went in, or how far a nearby development has come.

Before you start

You need the Metromap Aerial add-on, or a free trial that includes it. See Turn on recent aerial imagery to switch it on.

View older imagery

  1. Open the site. Search for the address or suburb, or open a property from your pipeline.
  2. Turn on Metromap Aerial. Click the Layers button on the right of the map and switch on Metromap Aerial under Basemaps.
  3. Zoom in. When you’re zoomed in close, a date picker appears at the top of the map. The latest capture is selected first.
  4. Choose a date. Open the dropdown to see every capture date available for that spot, and pick one. The map updates to that capture.
  5. Step through captures. Use the left and right arrows either side of the dropdown to move to the next older or newer capture.

The dates on offer depend on where you are on the map. As you move around, the list updates for the new area.

Tip

Draw the lot outline with the drawing tool first, then step through the dates. It makes it easy to see what changed inside the boundary. See Use the drawing tool.

Common questions

I can’t see the date picker

Check that Metromap Aerial is the basemap and that you’re zoomed in close. The date picker only shows at street-level zoom.

It says No Aerial Coverage

MetroMap doesn’t have imagery for that spot. Coverage is best in capital cities and inner-city areas. See Where Stash sources its data.

Can I see older imagery in a report?

Yes. In a property development report with Metromap aerials, you can choose the image date for the aerial. See Create a property development report.
