Heritage registers list buildings, places and areas protected for their historical or cultural value. A heritage listing can limit demolition, extensions and changes to a property’s appearance, so it’s worth checking early. Stash shows heritage listings as a map overlay and on each property page.
Before you start
Map overlays need an active Stash subscription or free trial. If Heritage shows a lock icon, it isn’t included in your account. See plans.
Turn on the Heritage overlay
- Go to the area you’re researching. Search for a suburb or address, or move the map there.
- Open the Layers panel. Click the Layers button on the right-hand side of the map.
- Turn on Heritage. Under Overlays, switch on Heritage. Heritage-listed places and areas are shaded on the map.
- Choose a clear basemap. Street gives the best contrast. Turn off Zoning if the colours overlap.

The Zoning Legend, in the toolbar at the top right of the map, includes the Heritage colour.
Check heritage on a property
- Open the property. Click it on the map, or search for its address.
- Open the Planning Insights tab. The Risks & Planning Overlays card shows Heritage detected, Heritage not detected or Heritage not available.
- Check the source. Below the result you’ll see the Source (for example, council) and when it was Updated. Where council and state data both exist, Stash shows the council source.

You’ll also find heritage in the Property Risks section of the property’s Planning Info page. See Minimum lot size and zoning details.
Coverage
Heritage data comes from state governments (all except the Northern Territory), plus local councils in Queensland. It’s usually updated quarterly. For other overlays and sources, see Where Stash sources its data.
Heritage data in Stash is a guide only. Local heritage listings, conservation areas and character overlays may not all be included, and registers change. Before you buy, build or advise a client, check the state heritage register and the council’s planning scheme, or speak to a town planner or heritage adviser.
Common questions
Heritage says not detected. Does that mean there’s no listing?
Not always. It means Stash didn’t find a listing in the data it holds for that property. Council-level heritage outside Queensland may not be covered, so confirm with the council.
What does “Heritage not available” mean?
There isn’t heritage data for that area in Stash yet.
Can I see heritage with other overlays?
Yes. Switch on Flooding, Bushfire or Biodiversity at the same time. See Map layers and overlays.
