You can measure the area of anything on the Stash map, such as a whole lot, a house footprint, a proposed subdivided lot or a building envelope. Areas are in square metres (m²).
Before you start
The drawing tools are in the toolbar at the top right of the map on a computer. They aren’t shown in the Stash mobile app.
Measure an area
- Go to the property. Search for the address, or click it on the map. An aerial basemap such as Satellite makes it easier to trace a roof or fence line. Turning on Boundaries in the Layers panel helps when you trace a lot.
- Click Draw Area. It’s in the toolbar at the top right of the map. The Draw Area panel opens with instructions.
- Click each corner. Click on the map at each corner of the shape you want to measure. While you draw, the Measurements section shows Area (m²), plus Distance (m) and Distance Total (m) for the edges.
- Double-click to finish. The shape closes, the area appears in the middle and the side lengths appear along each edge.
- Add details. In the panel, add a Label (for example, “Lot A”), and tick or untick Measure Area and Measure Length to show or hide the measurements. You can also change the Color and Opacity, and set a Height [m] to show the shape as a building in 3D.
- Click Save. Your shape is saved to your account.

Edit or delete a shape
- Click Edit in the toolbar at the top right of the map.
- Click the shape to select it.
- Change it or delete it. Update the details and click Save, or click the bin icon at the top of the panel to delete it.
View your shapes in 3D
Give a shape a Height [m], then click 3D in the toolbar to see it as a block on the map. This is a quick way to check the scale of a proposed building next to its neighbours. See Switch between 2D and 3D view.
Click the More (…) button next to Preset and choose Save preset to reuse the same colour, height and measurement settings. Saved shapes stay on your account, and you can show or hide them with My Drawings in the Layers panel. See Use the drawing tool.
Map measurements depend on the imagery and boundary data, so they’re approximate. For exact lot sizes, check the property’s Area on the property page and the registered plan, or get a survey.
